Warning of delays as EIGHT MONTHS of roadworks to begin next week

The Dorset Council scheme to replace traffic lights and improve crossings at either end of Williams Avenue near Dorset County Hospital will start on Monday.

Work will take place in two phases, with phase 1 at the Bridport Road junction starting on September 15 and lasting until the end of December. Phase 2 at the Damers Road junction will be from January until April 2026.

To help reduce disruption around the hospital, Dorset Council is asking anyone not attending the hospital to “avoid using Williams Avenue during the works and to consider alternative routes or modes of transport where possible”.

A spokesperson for Dorset County Hospital told the Echo: “We advise anyone travelling to the main hospital for an appointment or to visit a loved one while these works are underway to allow for extra travel time.”

These new works will complete a year of disruption for residents around the town with works at Maumbury Cross Junction taking place from January to May, works at High East Street going on from May to mid-July and works ongoing at Damers Road, Marie Road and down at the Grove going on through August.

Dorset Council says that work at the Bridport Road and Damers Road junctions will create better and easier crossings as well as wider footways.

As well as this there will be changed traffic lanes at the junctions, modern, more responsive traffic lights and shared footways and cycleways.

Phase 1 works will include: upgraded traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, a new pedestrian crossing, the removal of the left turn lane, single lane exit from Williams Avenue, a widened footway/cycleway on the approach to Williams Avenue and new crossing, a new cycle lane and road resurfacing.

Work in phase 2 will include upgraded signals and crossings, new crossing east of the junction, widened footway on south side of Damers Road, a single lane exit from Williams Avenue, a widened footway/cycleway, and uphill cycle lane, a new cycle route to local schools and Poundbury as well as road resurfacing

Three 30-minute bays on Damers Road will be removed to widen the south-side footway. Four bays will remain.
